To the Administrative Council of Devnet
Rome
Dear Friends,
I here by tender my resignation of the post of President and member of the Associazione Devnet, effective from August 22nd. My resignation is due to personal reasons, and I would like to take this oportunity to thank everyone who has supported me in my path since the creation of Devnet in 1984.
My memory goes to those who made possible the accomplishment of a then very topical project, particularly Brad Morse, administrator of PNUD, and Narinder Aggarwala, the Project Coordinator to whom Morse assigned the direction of the pilot phase, with the participation of China, India, The Philipines, Kenya, Zimbawe, Egipt, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. I would also like to remember that it was IPS that was charged with the task of putting in motion the institution and that it was by IPS's initiative that an NGO responsible exclusively for the project was created: Devnet. I would also like to remember here the constant support of the Italian Cooperation, as well as the support recieved by the European Union and the Government of Austria.
In this quarter of a century, the world changed profoundly. International cooperation is the Cinderella of international relations.
The United Nations has been deeply affected by the attacks to multi-lateralism and the pressure to install a unipolar and unilateral system. We are living in the end of the era of Western supremacy and the beginning of a new world, the time of Asia.
But the problems are still the same: poverty for most of humanity, national and international injustice. The new values of greed, market, success that this kind of globalization entails makes the values of the paradigm of development disappear: transparency, participation, social justice, cooperation, human dignity. We went from the paradigm where the goal was for Man being more, to the paradigm where the goal is for Man to have more.
Devnet was always faithful to its original vocation: to be at the service of the development of its participants. Time has changed, but my wish is that the time to come in the institution will be able to maintain the road of service, especially to the less favoured part of the world, like in the Winner, where so many women managed to become the actresses of their own life.
I hope that Devnet will stay faithful to its principles, its history and ethics.
Best regards, Roberto Savio
